Use the amended-return service
An amended individual return, usually Form 1040-X, is tracked in Where’s My Amended Return rather than the ordinary Where’s My Refund service. The IRS says it can take three weeks after filing for the amended return to appear.
Allow for the separate processing window
The IRS says amended returns generally take 8–12 weeks to process and can take up to 16 weeks. Account reviews or other issues can take longer. The ordinary refund estimator is not designed for amended returns.
Read the three amended stages
Received means the IRS has the amended return. Adjusted means the account adjustment has been made and may involve a refund, balance due or no change. Completed means processing is finished and the IRS has sent the information connected with the amendment.
Check or call through the official service
Use the official amended-return tracker or call 866-464-2050. Follow the service’s instructions about contacting the IRS. We cannot see or speed up your amendment.
